Did you know that the true statistics being depicted by governments around the world are inaccurate? Having been a survivor of a fiercely traumatic abduction and sexual assaults, I have taken it upon myself to enlighten the public, more specifically women, on the dangers that lurk both in and surrounding our lives.
The question that always seems to boggle my mind is the ‘why’ behind it all. Why can’t the average person take the time to study the statistics and calculate the real number of women who suffer daily at the hands of abusers? After all, we all have mothers, wives, daughters, siblings and other loved ones who are at risk on a daily basis. Why does society continue to treat abuse and sexual assault with a side glance? Of course these are all rhetorical questions and my role is to shed a 100 watt LED light on the reality of our suffering, beginning with these more realistic statistics:
➢ 1 woman is assaulted every 17 minutes
➢ Every 73 seconds a woman is raped
➢ 1 in 10 women are assaulted in a post secondary institution
➢ 1 in 4 girls is assaulted by the age of 18
➢ 1 in 3 women will experience sexual violence in their lifetime
Now do the math, if approximately 85% of women who are assaulted or abused in anyway DO NOT report these incidents, can you imagine the hundreds of millions if not billions of women whose lives have been wrecked? Come on people….don’t discard their suffering and the immense pain being endured by those in their families and close circles. (269)
